My suggestion would be to take the game slow, and try out different skill combination and just experiment and be flexible. People that tell you to go to PvX or the Sticky are under the assumption that those sources even have good ranger builds, which they don't. Ranger seems to be one of those professions that really have no set build. You take what you need. I am really starting to understand that concept more and more as I play ranger compared to other professions. The term Jack of all trades isn't so much that you CAN run anything, but that you SHOULD. You have no set build to use, you use what is needed. Heavy casting, you whip out BHA. Large groups, Barrage, etc...
Your best friend for ranger builds isn't PvX, but gw.gamewikis.org. Look up each mission before you start, check out enemies present and any tips or suggestions. That will determine your build. That why it is key to familiarize yourself with each skill, so you can research an area, pick the right skills and start.
I wonder if my advice is applicable to all professions?
